FCC v Wealdstone Corinthians
By Fulmer CC | July 30, 2011
Fulmer 237-8
Wealdstone 112-8
FCC won by 125 runs
Saturday 30 July saw a welcome return to some summer sunshine and the prompt arrival of our visitors from Wealdstone meant things got underway on time. Opposing skipper Steve called tails and his Fulmer equivalent Tony was delighted to Queen Elizabeth looking back up at him and elected to bat.
Prash and Jamie King got things underway but not for long! Prash was bowled cheaply and soon after Jamie adjudged leg before, so a period of consolidation was required.
Nick & Zeeshan responded well to this task with the latter being particularly fluent with some stylish hitting through the offside. Somewhat surprisingly given the early wickets, Wealdstone opted for a defensive field which enabled runs to come readily without much pressure. It therefore came as quite a shock when Zeeshan having cruised to a classy 26, guided a wide long hop straight to shortish third man.
This saw the welcome return of Ali to the Saturday scene and both he and the increasingly confident Nick added further useful runs. Ali was out bowled to be followed to the crease by Will Voaden the latest recruit from the flourishing Fulmer youth academy!
He clearly has great technical ability and batted with great style and confidence for one so young which bodes well for the future. His departure bought Steve to the crease to join Nick who had reached yet another 50 in a prolific season and who looked set fair to turn this into three figures until nicking one and being caught behind for 71.
Ian came and went pretty quickly which bought Del to the crease. His first scoring shot resulting in a 5 ( a single and 4 overthrows ). Having survived one run out, Del applied full “after burners” to propel his sixteen stone frame attempting another single but to no avail. So at 177-8 with just over 5 overs left Fulmer were at risk of underachieving.
Tony joined Steve and runs came thick and fast, Steve taking a heavy toll of the leg side boundary and Tony driving straight down the ground, 60 runs coming from just 31 balls, Steve ended with a Fulmer best 44 not out and Tony on 26 not out. This resulted in a 40 over total of 237-8
After another delightful “Tansy” tea ably supported by “drink master” Ben, Wealdstone set about their chase. A devastating opening three wicket spell from Ali (8 overs, 3-24) effectively put the game out of their reach. Another three wicket haul, this time from from Will (8 overs, 3-10) who bowled with both pace and movement meant the game was effectively over. A stunning run out from Zeeshan added a wicket from his four over spell. Steve, Del and Paul all bowled well but with no luck and the Wealdstone innings petered out to 112-8 from their 40 overs. So a welcome return to winning ways, against a great bunch of guys with both sides playing the game in the right way. So Fulmer were able to respond to life after Nige!
