FCC v Rivets

By | September 3, 2011

Fulmer 140 all out

Rivets 141 for 7

FCC lost by 3 wickets

Having suffered a reversal earlier in the season our opponents arrived keen to restore the balance. Fulmer won the toss and as a result elected to bat, a trouble free start gave every indication that we were going to post a big score. Indeed, Fulmer reached 54 before the loss of the first wicket. Thereafter it was a story of people that looked set getting out at critical times. Prash, Nige and Nick who have been the backbone of our heavy scoring this year, went for 42, 28 and 24 respectively.

Unfortunately on this occasion nobody from the lower order rose to the challenge – there were three ducks recorded from the next six batsmen All of which resulted in a seriously below par score of 140 all out. Credit must be given to our opponents who bowled and fielded well throughout.

Fulmer knew at tea time that without Ali to spearhead the attack their task would be that much tougher and that the fielders would need to back up their bowlers.

Uzair took up the challenge of opening from the top end and bowled with pace and accuracy but liitle luck, taking one wicket in an 8 over spell costing just 11 runs.

Rivets batting relied quite heavily on Shamas who proceeded to drive down the ground with customary ferocity. Mark, however, kept the pressure on in bowling another great spell of 8 overs, 3 maidens, 2 wickets for 12 runs. Our fielding didn’t quite deliver as we missed a couple of takeable chances which allowed.

Both Shamas and Grey to stay longer than they should, the former eventually going for 48 and the latter 39 not out. Prash on this occasion had no joy his 4 over spell costing 41 runs for 1 wicket. A late flurry from Colly – 2 overs 2 wickets for 4 runs – caused adrenaline to pump on both sides! Rivets stuck at it determinedly and reached the target for the loss of 7 wickets.

So Rivets got the victory they deserved and over a beer Fulmer were able to reflect on where they went wrong. From a season’s perspective “Honours even” against opponents whose company we enjoy, who play the
game in the right way. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon!
