Sunday 30th May 2010 v Stokenchurch (Away)

Fulmer 191 lost to Stokenchurch 296-6 by 105 runs

There was a chill wind blowing down the ground despite the sun shining at Stokenchurch’s compact ground atop the Chiltern Ridge, at 750 feet above sea level this is one of the highest grounds in Southern England. And Fulmers’ blood was further chilled by a devastating onslaught on the bowlers as Stokenchurch declared after just 33 overs of their allotted 40 four runs shy of 300.

The slaughter was led by a Mr Latif from Pakistan (178 not out) – a player with A grade cricket experience in his homeland, and an ability that made a mockery of the contest. He got off the mark with a four and then a six driven powerfully down the ground off Zeeshan. He went on to blast 14 sixes as balls were routinely lost to some of the biggest hitting we have seen – Paul Colloff risking three overs of his gentle spin when Mr Latif was truly off the leash, and returning 0-60 from three overs.

There was no hiding place for Fulmer in the field and with a healthy colts set up as well Stokenchurch had a youth and vibrancy in the field to back up their star player’s slaughter with the bat.

Having said that, Uzair led the rearguard action in typically confident style. Determined to give Stokenchurch an example of his own ability, his fine early season form continued with an excellent century (107). Sadly there was little support on offer elsewhere to help Uzair, 27 being our second best score from the batsmen. We briefly threatened to hold out for a draw as the home skipper used eight bowlers before class told and Stokenchurch wrapped up a convincing win.
